It is an open-air venue for gladiatorial contests called munera with ascending seating. It can accommodate 50000 people. Apart from the gladiatorial competitions, the building was also used for animal hunts, executions and mock sea battles. In the early medieval period the building was used as entertainment performance. It was believed that over a million wild animals and 5000000 people died in the gladiatorial contests. The building was damaged by earthquakes in the 21st century.
It is one of the most popular attractions for tourist in Rome. The Colosseum is featured on the Italian five cent euro coin. The building was voted as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007.
